Memorial plaque of Professor Hjalmar Uggla

       
                 
   

   On 23rd June 2009 in the Department of Soil Science and Soil Protection of University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, a memorial plaque of Professor Hjalmar Uggla (1908-1983) – the outstanding scientist of soil, nature and forestry sciences, the Righteous Among the Nation, Polish patriot with Swedish origin, was unveiled in the hall.
  The memorial plaque was unveiled by: professor Jadwiga Wyszkowska and professor Władysław Kordan – Prorectors of UWM and by the youngest daughter of Professor Hjalmar Uggla – Anna Gajewska.
   The ceremony was honoured by the presence of: Marian Podziewski – voivode of Warmia and Mazury, Bogdan Meina – the chairman of the Departament of Environmental Protection of Warmia and Mazury Marshal’s Office, Halina Zaborowska-Boruch – vice-president of Olsztyn city, Paweł Artych and Stanisław Dąbrowski – from the Regional Office of State Forests.
  Also Professor’s children were present: Anna Gajewska, daughter living in Olsztyn as well as the sons: Jan, Andrzej and Zbigniew with their families living in Sweden.
   Prominent scientists, Professor’s students and colleagues arrived for the ceremony: prof. Jan Siuta from the Institute of Environmental Protection in Warsaw, prof. Piotr Skłodowski – the chairman of the Polish Society of Soil Science, prof. Stanisław Białousz from the Warsaw University of Technology, prof. Andrzej Mocek from the Poznan University of Life Sciences, prof. Henryk Terelak from the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation in Pulawy, prof. Renata Bednarek from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, prof. Danuta Czępińska-Kamińska from the Warsaw University of Life Sciences and other scientists and workers of University of Warmia and Mazury, who remembered Professor Uggla.
   The speeches were made by: dr hab. Andrzej Łachacz, prof. of UWM (the head of the Department of Soil Science and Soil Protection), Anna Gajewska, prof. Jan Siuta, prof. Piotr Skłodowski and dr Paweł Nicia (on behalf of prof. Anna Miechówka and workers of the Department of Soil Science and Soil Protection of University of Agriculture in Krakow).
   The memorial plaque was made of stone (gneiss) with bronze bust and was designed by an artist – prof. Kazimierz Rykowski from the Forest Research Institute. The flowers in memory of Professor Uggla were put by: Marian Podziewski – voivode of Warmia and Mazury, representatives of Marshal’s Office and President’s of Olsztyn, Paweł Artych from the Regional Office of National Forests and by the scientists.
   After the ceremony, in the Department of Soil Science and Soil Protection, a commemorate meeting during which Prof Stanislaw Białousz, prof. Henryk Piaścik (former head of the Department of Soil Science and Soil Protection) and prof. Teofil Mazur (former head of the Department of Environmental Chemistry) reminisced about Profesor Hjalmar Uggla.

   During the Polish-Swedish conference "Clean energy and clean water" on 9th October 2009,  held in the Main Library of UWM in Olsztyn, a ceremony of putting flowers under the memorial plaque dedicated to Professor Hjalmar Uggla took place at the Department of Soil Science and Soil Protection.
   The flowers were put by the ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden, Dag Hartelius and by the Undersecretary of State, Chief Nature Conservator at the Ministry of the Environment, Janusz Zaleski.
   On behalf of the marshal of Warmia and Mazury Voivodeship, Mr Jacek Protas, the flowers were put by the director of the Department of Environmental Protection – Bogdan Meina. Flowers were also put by the vice-voivode of Warmia and Mazury – Mr. Jan Maścianica and the president of Olsztyn – Dr. Eng. Piotr Grzymowicz.
   The authorities of the University of Warmia and Mazury were represented by the prorector for Education – Professor Wojciech Janczukowicz and by the dean of the Faculty of Environmental Management and Agriculture – Professor Józef Tworkowski.
   Distinguished guests were welcomed by the head of the Department, Professor Andrzej Łachacz, who presented major accomplishments of Professor Hjalmar Uggla. The guests gathered in the seminar room of the Department, where memorabilia associated with the Professor were collected. Mr. Ambassador, and the persons accompanying him, acquainted with the papers and student books authored by Professor Hjalmar Uggla, as well as with the chronicle of the Department for the years 1950-1983.
