Analysis of mercury in solutions

Determination of mercury in solutions needs several steps:

oxidation to Hg(II) reduction to Hg(0) evaporation  detection

continuous mixing of a sample with an oxidizing reagent (e.g. KMnO4, K2Cr2O7)

the mixture is heated to ca. 98 oC in a reaction coil

addition of hydroxylamine and SnCl2 to reduce Hg to an elementar state

evaporation in cross-flow reactor, dehumidification Hg vapours

determination in the atomic absorption spectrometer
