• Ireneusz Skupień, Post-modernism and historicity. The Hudsucker Proxy by Coen brothers

    Key words:

post-modernism, genre, narration, historicity, history, realism

    Summary:

The author of the article tries to prove that post-modernist texts are open to an experience of historicity. The analysed example is The Hudsucker Proxy by Joel and Ethan Coen. This text goes beyond the traditional classification of these filmmakers’ Postmodernizm a historyczność. Hudsucker Proxy braci Coen 69 works within the post-modernist paradigm. It portrays the double possibility of opening of this work to the category of historicity that is claimed by the Canadian researcher Linda Hutcheon: it is a form of reconstruction of the past, visualisation of the work on the screen, and the use of history as a mask behind which problems of the modern world are discussed. That strategy is realised in Hudsucker Proxy in a few ways: through references and quotations to the cinema of the 1930s and 1940s, through interventions questioning realism and through the direct depiction of the specific historical period (the second half of the 1950s). The central topic of reflections on works of the Coen brothers is the relationship between “the text” and “the world”.
