Research Internship in Sheffield – Implementing the Méndez Principles in Police and Investigative Practice
From June 24 to July 4, 2025, Dr. habil. Denis Solodov, Professor at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, completed a research internship at the University of Sheffield (United Kingdom) as part of the COST Action CA22128: Implementing the Méndez Principles on Effective Interviewing.
During his stay, Dr. Solodov participated in debates organized by the Centre for Criminological Research at the School of Law, University of Sheffield. These meetings focused on the challenges of translating academic research findings into legislative processes. Participants exchanged experiences with members of parliamentary advisory bodies and scholars collaborating with the UK Parliament.
An important element of the internship was a roundtable discussion attended by police officers and academic representatives, during which the core principles of the Méndez Guidelines and ongoing project activities were presented. The meeting provided a valuable space for open dialogue on the challenges of police training and the implementation of ethical interviewing models.
Another highlight was participation in the Policing Innovation Forum held in York, organized by the N8 Policing Research Partnership. The main theme of the forum was neurodiversity within the justice system. The event combined keynote presentations with a series of roundtable discussions bringing together practitioners and researchers.
During the visit, Dr. Solodov also toured key policing institutions in South Yorkshire, including the Robert Dyson House Training Centre and the South Yorkshire Police Custody Suite, gaining insight into modern training methods—such as the immersive Hydra simulation-based training program—and the high standards of detainee rights protection and professional police ethics.
An interview about the experience and future plans will be published in the September issue of Wiadomości Uniwersyteckie.
