The Aim

The present project concerns grammar of phraseology and Polish language automatic processing. Its main aim is to compile a computer dictionary of paradigms of compound verbal units (linguistic units that fulfil the function of verb in the sentence), such as: coś ma ręce i nogi (‘something is sensible, well organized’, lit. something has hands and legs), ktoś ładuje akumulatory (‘somebody recovers, gathers all his/her strength’, lit. somebody is charging the batteries), ktoś z niejednego pieca chleb jadł (‘somebody has seen quite a few things’, lit. somebody ate bread from many ovens) etc. The material (collection of units) comes from the dictionaries of Polish language, the phraseological dictionaries and the files collected by the project contractors. The analysis is to be carried out with reference to both linguistic competence and research of existing text corpora, especially the National Corpus of Polish.

The project is bound up with an algorithmized description of inflection of phraseological units, and as such will also be a verification for existing tools that are made mainly for lexemes, thus not having in mind the particular problems caused by multi-word units.

Theoretical assumptions

Methodologically, the project refers to the concept of language units by Andrzej Bogusławski and to the findings of Andrzej Maria Lewicki, especially to his distinction between internal and external syntax as well as to the functional classification of phraseological units.

In the research it is assumed that one may ascribe the inflectional categories of person, number, gender, time and mood to verbal multi-word units. If all mentioned categories are realized in a verbal multi-word unit, the unit may be said to have a whole paradigm. The impersonal forms, i.e. infinitive, impersonal and adverbial participle, are included in the paradigm. Additionally, it is checked if a verbal multi-word unit has also an aspectual counterpart. The key problem of the analysis is to what extent the paradigm of individual units is dependent on the characteristics of the main verbal component and to what extent the paradigm is separate, and determined by individual characteristics of the verbal multi-word unit.

Computerized tools of description

In the computer dictionary of paradigms of compound verbal units, the application Toposław is used. It was already used to create SEJF (Electronic Dictionary of Phraseological Units). The program uses Morfeusz which is a morphological analyser based on Grammatical Dictionary of Polish Language.
