I. Course Description:

This course provides second year medical students with the basic facts and principles of Human Physiology. These principles are necessary to understand the mechanisms of disease, as well as treatments for pathological conditions. This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the unique role of each organ and organ system in maintaining health and homeostasis.

III. Grading performance in Labs, Seminars and Exams:

The Laboratories:

Lab Work performance is assessed on a weekly basis so that students get practice in researching, analyzing and application of the information learned in the course. Groups will be determined by your group in lab (10 students to each group). Your Laboratory Grade will be based on: your present in class for the whole class in order to receive credit for the assignment. Your group will turn in a report based on the questions in the lab study. Laboratory reports for each lab will be picked up and graded, (fail or pass). The questions/material covered in the lab reports may be used as questions on the Exams. Students should answer all the lab questions to help them prepare for the Exams. You must understand topics covered early in the course and be prepared for the class. Student is obliged to pass minimum 50% of the class quizzes and Lab reports of the given system.

In-Class Quizzes: There will be weekly quizzes (5 very short question). These will serve as a record of your attendance and as a chance for you to test your current knowledge. We will start each Lab classes with an quiz

be on time, no late quizzes will be given!

NOTE!! If you will be late for the laboratories (10 minutes) you will lose the chance to write Quizzes and receive a failing grade.

Absence more than two laboratories and seminars  in semester will be deemed a failure in the whole course.

You will have to be able to integrate material that you learn throughout the course. Be aware that the topics in this course build on each other. Attendance to the laboratories is mandatory. Arriving -10 minutes after the start of laboratories will be consider an absence. We will begin class promptly. Retake Lab opportunity is not provided. The student is obliged to report an absence to the person conducting exercise and pass it orally. If it is not done before the test the student has not got the right to their first attempt.

You will be responsible for cleaning up before you leave lab. Distribution of course materials, i.e. handouts, case studies, power point presentation etc., is strictly prohibited.

The Seminars: Seminars are held weekly (always check the schedule!) and are for discussion of ongoing lecture material. Students are required to prepare short power point presentation (10-15 minutes long), two persons are obliged to prepare a seminar. The topic of which is determined in advance but in principle is related to the lecture, and laboratory material of the previous week. If the student didn't pass the seminar, he does not have a right to resit.

Pass - 3, 3+, 4, 4+, 5 grade

Fail - 2 grade

Passing grade  for the Seminars will be 3,0 (this is the average of all your given seminars) in each semester.  If a student receives an average below 3.0, at the end of the semester he/she is obliged  to write an essay concerning all seminar topics.

Exams: There will be 8 regular exams and 1 comprehensive final exam. Four (4) exams will be given during the each semester. Each exam (25 questions) can be a combination of multiple-choice test - 15 questions, matching, true/false, completion, fill-in-the-blank, and short answer questions - 5 questions, and  essay –type  5 questions, in many cases, you will be asked to illustrate your answer (please draw neatly!). Some of the short-answer questions will be based on diagrams/figures that you should be familiar with and able to interpret.

Unit exams have a 60-120 minute time limit, each unit exam is worth 125 points.

They will be given on the dates in the schedule. All exams must be taken in order to receive credit for the course. All exams must be taken during scheduled time, unless due to extenuating circumstances. Make-up exams may be given to those students who, for extenuating reasons, cannot take an exam at the appointed time. A note from student health or physician is required if you miss the exam for reason of illness. Student is expected to arrange make-up exam in a timely manner (need to be taken within a maximum of 5 days) after the time of the original exam.

The instructor, at all times, reserves the right not to allow a make-up exam. I strongly recommend all students schedule the exam on the first available day. Exams are used to measure your ability to learn, understand, and comprehend basic human physiology. Exam results will be returned in class approximately 1 week after exam date.

Exams are NOT released to students. Exams can only be reviewed one time and reviews must be completed by the first week (day of the week) after the specific exam.

Grading:

First Exam          125 pts - the passing grade is 81 pts        (65% of grade)

Retake                125 pts - the passing grade is 87,5   pts   (70% of grade)

Second Retake  125pts – the passing grade is 93,5 pts     (75% of grade)

Be aware that in order to pass  retake exams you must score 70% or higher 75% compare to the first attempt

Student is obliged to pass every test from the given system. During the semester student has a right to fail one test. BUT In that case student may resit it, at the end of the semester.

If the student does not pass more than one test from another chapter (using all of his attempts) he does not complete a course and does not have the right to attend classes.
