The Department of Plant Breeding and Seed Production was established in 1951 as an organizational unit of the then Faculty of Agriculture at the Higher School of Agriculture in Olsztyn. Lectures on genetics and plant breeding were then conducted by doc. dr hab. Antoni Filutowicz from IHAR in Bydgoszcz, and lectures from agricultural experimentation led by mgr. Bohdan Szychulski. In 1953, the menagement of the Department became doc. dr Zygmunt Tomaszewski (in the picture below). In 1970, in connection with the reorganization of the higher school, the Institute of Plant Breeding and Seed Production is established. In 1972, the Higher School of Agriculture was transformed into the Academy of Agriculture and Technology. Until 1976, the Institute was headed by prof. dr. Zygmunt Tomaszewski.
In 1976, the head of the Institute and then of the Department was prof. dr hab. Krystyna Kusiorska (in the picture below). In 1984, the Department of Plant Breeding and Seed Production included the Seed and Genetics Facility and the Plant Breeding and Experimental Facility. In 1992, the head of the Department was appointed prof. dr hab. Irena Koczowska (in the picture below).
In 2001, as part of internal restructuring, the Faculty of Environmental Management and Agriculture abandoned the division of Departments into Facilities. Since 2002, the head of the Department of Plant Breeding and Seed Production is prof. dr hab. Józef Tworkowski (in the picture below). Currently, in the Department are working 6 professors, 6 adjuncts, 5 engineering and technical staff and 6 PhD students.
