Krzysztof Kościuszko (Olsztyn) Defending Witkiewicz’s Aesthetics of Pure Form Against Allegations of Leon Chwistek

I am going to defend Witkacy against Chwistek’s accusation, according to which Witkacy did not recognize realistic works as works of art at all. In opposition to Chwistek I think that Witkacy was not the enemy of realism. To show this I introduce the concept of an objective hierarchy of works of art. I distinguish more valuable art from less valuable. Real art (more valuable art) is capable of evoking metaphysical feelings. If a realistic worki is able to evoke such feelings the nit was approved by Witkacy. A work of art is all the better the more it contains mataphysicality. Imitative-symbolic-moralizing art is also art (I say this against Chwistek’s misinterpretations of Witkacy’s thought), but when it is saturated with formal, constructional and metaphysical element – it is art by capital A. Besides I want to suggest how Witkacy understand „beauty”? I also distinguish Witkacy’s formalism from R.Zimmerman and K.Fiedler formalism.
