INVITATION
to the International Conference
POLISH-GERMAN RELATIONS QUARTER OF A CENTURY LATER
Olsztyn, 20-22 June 2016
17 June 2016 is the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Good Neighbourhood and Friendly Cooperation between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Poland. Referring to the previous jubilee and the conference organised almost five years ago, the papers presented at which were published as a collection of articles by the Institute of Political Science of the University of Warmia and Mazury (Problem stosunków polsko-niemieckich po traktacie z 1991 roku z perspektywy regionalnej [The Problem of Polish-German Relations after the Treaty of 1991 from the Regional Perspective] Krzysztof Gładkowski (ed.), Olsztyn 2014), this time we would like to extend the previously assumed concept of a meeting of various academic circles focused on the Treaty and its consequences for the Polish-German relations.
The main areas of discussion about Polish-German relations in the past 25 years are mutual relations in such areas as politics, economy, international security, science, education, art and cultural heritage, churches and reconciliation, Poland and Germany in the European Union, the German minority and national and ethnic minorities in Poland and Germany, the image of Poland and Germany in the media. We do not limit the topics related to the Polish-German mutual relations only to the areas listed above. Therefore, we would like to invite all communities and circles that would like to present and share their output and experience from the bilateral cooperation in the form of scientific studies, research projects, educational projects and others.
Not only the recapitulation of the last 25 years is important for us to diagnose the Polish-German relations, but, most of all, the resulting problems and areas that require urgent care and attention, concerning the current situation in Europe and in the world.
We put a particular emphasis on the presentation of the Polish and German cultural heritage in the European context. We particularly expect the presentation of historical research on Polish-German mutual relations, Polish-German memorial sites and other areas of cooperation, also those which should be dealt with in the near future. In connection with the announcement of the Feliks Nowowiejski Year by the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, we will devote a special panel discussion to the Polish composer, because we think that culture, particularly music, has a special positive role in the Polish-German relations.
Presenting the lives of national communities – minorities in both countries is equally important. We would like to look at the achievements of associations that unite the German community in Poland, but also at the problems and the life of the Polish community in Germany. We would not like to restrict ourselves only to these two national groups, but we also want to learn about the coexistence and cooperation of other national minorities in Poland. In this regard, we count on the cooperation and active participation in the preparations as well as in the conference itself of the representatives of diplomatic posts of countries whose diplomatic posts can be found in Poland. The aim of this is to find out as much as possible about the condition of the international cooperation in Poland and in the motherlands of the minority nations. We also invite Polish circles and groups living and working outside Poland to share their experiences and research results pertaining to the Polish-German relations. Our meeting is an opportunity to share experiences from various places in Europe and in the world, especially countries neighbouring with the Republic of Poland.
