Justyna Szlachta-Ignatowicz (Warsaw University) - The Experience of Two Cities Existence as a Source of literary inspirations of Adam Zagajewski

   The possibility of existing in different places creates the chance to get to know other places, acquire broader perspectives and gain new experiences. Undoubtedly this has an influence on the emotional and human development. On the other side the situation of functioning in multiple places can create problems with the definition of ones identity. Undoubtedly an important determinator of every identity is the awareness of ones place of origin. The awareness of his place origin as well as his new place of living imprinted an imperishable mark on the creations of Adam Zagajewski. The presented text deals with the analysis of the story “Two Cities”. The work opens up the characteristic of dividing people into settled, emigrants and homeless. The main part of the story is a detailed and multi-layered description of the childhood and youth that have an influence on the attitude of the grown human. In the work there is an appearance of the characteristic of the oldest generation, coming to Silesia from Lwów, which in reality functioned in two worlds simultaneously. The author himself experiences similar emotions after he starts university - he starts to function in two worlds - the real and fictional ones. The before mentioned motif of the split, of functioning in two worlds show in the whole work of Adam Zagajewski.
