Teresa Astramowicz-Leyk, Professor at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn at the Institute of Political Science, has been named a Distinguished Professor at Lviv Polytechnic. This is one of the best and most important Ukrainian universities. On 25 October, in the main auditorium of the National University of Lviv Polytechnic, decorated with paintings by Jan Matejko, Teresa Astramowicz-Leyk, received the title of Distinguished Professor (Honorary Professor) of this university from the hands of Prof. Yuriy Bobalo, Rector of the Lviv Polytechnic.

This title was awarded to her unanimously by the Senate of the Lviv Polytechnic. The laudation was delivered by Prof. Yarina Turchyn, Director of the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences.

For what merits did the Senate of the Lviv Polytechnic award Prof. Astramowicz-Leyk the title of Distinguished Professor?

Prof. Teresa Astramowicz-Leyk has been working intensively with the Lviv Polytechnic for 6 years as a representative of the Institute of Political Science at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (Faculty of Social Sciences). During that time she has co-organized six editions of Polish-Ukrainian Scientific Forums taking place alternately in Olsztyn and Lviv. They are attended not only by academics and students of both universities and other universities, but also by local government officials, politicians and diplomats. She is the initiator of the awarding of double diplomas and the supervisor of trainees from Lviv universities. So far she has taken care of 20 people, helping them not only to obtain internships, but also scholarships, to establish scientific contacts in Poland and to conduct research, e.g. on the Ukrainian minority in Poland, and during the lockdown, she also “mothered” isolated Ukrainian students. She organised two Polish-Ukrainian scientific conferences. She edited 10 Polish-Ukrainian monographs. Teresa Astramowicz-Leyk is also a councillor of the regional assembly of the Warmia and Mazury Region and is very much involved in Polish-Ukrainian cooperation as a local government officer.

The ceremony was attended by Tomasz Kowal, Polish Vice-Consul in Lviv, and the award-winner's family.

Professor Teresa Astramowicz-Leyk is the first woman to receive this honourable title in the over 200-year history of Lviv Polytechnic (founded in 1816). The title was also given to Ignacy Mościcki, the former rector of this university and the former President of Poland. So far, the only woman awarded with the title of Doctor Honoris Causa was Maria Skłodowska-Curie in 1912. At the entrance to the hall there is a stone plaque with the names of all the distinguished professors of Lviv Polytechnic. The name of T. Astramowicz-Leyk is also there.
