Job Summary
One position are available at the University of Klaipėda, Lithuania within the EU-funded Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Innovative Training Networks (H2020-MSCA-ITN) CHIBOW (Children Born of War - Past Present Future). The Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) will work within the Institute of Baltic Region History and Archaeology, University of Klaipėda (Lithuania) on different aspects of the life
courses and experiences of Children Born of War in WW II in Lithuania and after (1945 -1953).
The ESRs will also be trained through Advanced Training Courses and workshops, topical conferences, secondments to other consortium nodes and an ambitious and carefully planned research activities benefiting from the expertise of world-leading senior academics.
We are seeking enthusiastically motivated candidates with a strong academic record holding a Master degree in a relevant subject, fluency in English and other linguistic skills (Russian, Polish, German, Lithuanian, Latvian etc.) and subject knowledge as required by the individual research projects.
The position are focused on the following topics, respectively:
WWII and “War after War” in Lithuania (1941 -1953). During World War II, Lithuania has experienced many demographic losses. In the period of the Nazi occupation (1941-1944) almost all Jewish community was destroyed. In Lithuanian territory WWII war did not ended in 1945 as in the other parts of Europe. Anti- Soviet guerrilla resistance in Lithuanian forests (“War after War”) lasted till 1953. On the basis of archival, and possibly field-based research, interview the project will examine the experiences of children who were born during the Nazi occupation and the Holocaust, experiences of Wolfskinder (orphaned children of German origin), children which have born in Soviet exile or during anti-Soviet warfare period in Lithuania (1944-1953).
Main Details
- Required to enroll in a PhD programme at the Institute of Baltic Region History and Archaeology, University of Klaipėda and study toward a doctoral degree
- Undertake prescribed research tasks in accordance with specified research projects in order to support the achievement of CHIBOW’s research strategy
- Follow prescribed steps in data analysis and experimental design when directed
- Suggest and contribute to the development of research techniques, models and methods in collaboration with colleagues
- Undertake collection of research data through a variety of research methods
- Disseminate research findings at internal meetings, meetings of the CHIBOW network and at scientific meetings
- Prepare work for written research reports and publications when directed
- Prioritise tasks within agreed work schedule to ensure that projects are delivered on time
- Spend designated phases of the doctoral programme with partner organisations in the Third Sector, via several secondments
- Carry out routine administrative tasks associated with specified research projects, e.g. organisation and documentation of project meetings
- Assist in supervision of undergraduate students working in similar projects.
- Liaise and collaborate with students and researchers at the University of Klaipeda and more widely within the CHIBOW network.
- Contribute to and assist in maintaining the CHIBOW web site.
- Follow best practice in research including best practice in ethical requirements
- Attend appropriate training courses
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience Required
Essential
- First class or Upper Second degree in relevant subject area (e.g. History, anthropology, political sciences, education)
- Detailed subject knowledge as required by the individual research projects
- High level analytical ability
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly
- Ability to assess resource requirements and use the resources effectively
- Excellent IT skills across all core Microsoft Office products including Word, Powerpoint, Access and Excel
- Ability to work as part of a team and also to work independently using own initiative
- Fluency in English and other linguistic skills (Russian, Polish, German, Lithuanian, Latvian, Yidish, Hebrew)
Desirable
- Thorough understanding and direct relevant experience of research methods
- Masters in relevant subject area
